Dave Snowden – Transparency is always the enemy of innovation

I think that the value of hackers is it just breaks up economy a bit, a little bit. But I don’t think it’s a long time recipe. I think we’ve got to work out. We talked about it a little earlier, we’ve got to work out our governance structure for the use of technology in society, and we’ve got to work something else around privacy, because the level of privacy we now got is almost non-existent, and transparency is always the enemy of innovation. If everybody can see everything nobody does anything.

So, if you look at the quality of politicians we’ve got, most of the great politicians of the 19th and early 20th century wouldn’t survive scrutiny by the modern press. The only way you survive as a politician is to be an anodyne goodie-good, a good guy, and those people don’t have maturity or statesmanship or anything else.
